Top 5 Travel Reward Tips

All of the recent nasty economic news may have woken some people up to the fact that they need to start saving more of their money. Travel budgets could be one of the first things cut for both pleasure and business, for instance. But it isn't all about saving money. You should also consider some of the easy ways you can make better use of the money you are spending by taking advantage of the offers out there from the very companies who's products you are already buying. That is just smart, no matter what the financial situation! Here are my 5 top travel reward tips:

1. Join loyalty programs. Savvy travelers have been members of loyalty programs for years, earning rewards for each of their flights, nights in hotels and car rentals. Hotels chains such as Marriott started their programs as long ago as 1983 with airlines kicking things off in 1979. Whenever you travel, make sure you have a rewards membership for the companies you use.
Travel Companion can help you find these with contact details for hundreds of companies and their rewards programs.

2. Use partner schemes. If you find yourself using lots of different airlines and hotel chains, (maybe you always try to find the cheapest fare regardless of the chain, or perhaps you don't get much of a say in your business travel arrangements,) it may not be the best approach to join every reward program out there. You could end up with lots of accounts with small amounts of points, never reaching enough in any of them for a reward. What you might not know is that many companies have partners meaning you can collect reward points on one airline's frequent flyer card while flying on another airline. If you are not a member of a company's program, check to see if they partner with any of your existing memberships.
Travel Companion contains links to all of the partner programs of the major airlines, hotels and car rental chains out there, making this job much easier.

3. Always earn something. If Tip 2 fails, be sure to join the rewards program anyway. You may as well start out and have a few thousand miles hanging around than having 0. You may end up topping them up every now and again to eventually get a reward.

4. Consolidate points. Transferring points from one program to another can help you make use of otherwise useless points. The conversion rate might be bad, but if you have a few spare points in one program that you barely use, you can sometimes convert them into another company's scheme to help you reach a reward there sooner.

5. Redeem realistic rewards. If you don't add points to your travel loyalty schemes very often then you are unlikely to earn that dream ticket. It might be a better option to claim some non-travel related rewards to save you money elsewhere. Several loyalty programs offer movie passes or gift certificates for instance.

Bonus Tip, (and this is the most important one): Claim your rewards! It may sound silly, but hording points forever is not saving you money! Once you have earned them, make sure you spend those loyalty points.
